Quick answer

Refresh the driving that matters to you

A refresher lesson is not automatically a test course or a complete restart. Tell your instructor what has changed, what feels uncomfortable and where you want more practice; the lesson can then focus on realistic, achievable priorities.

You might want one focused session or a sequence of lessons. The appropriate plan depends on confidence, current driving, the roads involved and the level of support required.

Returning after a break

Revisit controls, observations and everyday decisions at a manageable pace.

Confidence rebuilding

Begin in suitable conditions and gradually reintroduce situations that feel difficult.

New routes

Practise an unfamiliar commute, workplace journey, school route or regular destination.

Choose your focus

Refresher lessons can cover

Roundabouts and lanes

Approach planning, lane choice, signalling, observations and safe exits.

Parking

Bay parking, parallel parking, low-speed control and all-round observation.

Motorways

Joining, leaving, lane use, overtaking, signs, safe following distance and breakdown awareness where suitable.

Dual carriageways

Acceleration, merging, higher-speed planning, lane discipline and safe exits.

Night or poor weather

Visibility, lights, speed, stopping distance and adapting decisions to conditions.

City and rural driving

Busy traffic, vulnerable road users, narrow roads, bends and changing speed environments.

Motorway guidance

Licence status matters

Full-licence holders can use refresher tuition to build motorway confidence.

Learner drivers may only take motorway lessons when accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car. Motorway practice is voluntary and the instructor decides when the learner has suitable skills and experience.

Motorway lessons are not the only option

If motorway driving is not suitable or practical for the lesson, relevant higher-speed skills can be developed on dual carriageways and other appropriate roads. Location, traffic, weather, lesson time and current ability all affect what can be covered safely.

  • Joining and leaving safely
  • Lane discipline and overtaking
  • Speed and following distance
  • Signs and changing traffic conditions
  • Breakdown and emergency awareness

Confidence develops differently for each driver. Progress depends on experience, practice, health, circumstances and the driving situations involved.

Refresher lesson help

Frequently asked questions

How much is a refresher driving lesson?

The confirmed refresher lesson price is £40, subject to location, transmission and instructor availability.

Do I need to take another driving test?

A voluntary refresher lesson does not normally require another test. Different rules may apply if your licence has expired, been revoked, restricted or affected by a medical or legal issue; check official guidance for your circumstances.

Can I book a lesson just for motorway driving?

You can request motorway-focused tuition, but the instructor must confirm that it is suitable and practical based on licence status, ability, location, conditions and lesson time.

Can a learner driver take a motorway lesson?

Yes, only when accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car, and only when the instructor considers the learner ready.

Can refresher lessons help nervous drivers?

They can provide calm, structured practice, but no instructor can guarantee that every concern will disappear within a fixed number of lessons.

Can I practise in manual or automatic?

Both may be available, subject to postcode, instructor availability and the restrictions shown on your driving licence.

Where are refresher lessons available?

They are offered across confirmed areas in Manchester, Blackburn and Preston, subject to postcode and instructor availability.
